Winter Slope Flying at Warnimont Park
Posted by Greg Smith on Feb 28, 2007, 16:38

We were supposed to get another 8-plus inches of dry, fluffy snow today but it was more like a heavy, wet 4 inches. At least the forecast winds were right on. 20mph ESE. With this wind direction we could have gone back to Concordia but since the wind was a bit more easterly today we went to the Gun Club slope instead.

When I arrived at the Gun Club Slope I could see that Dave was already there and flying his 60-inch JW.

I got the LEG P-51 ready again. It is my go to plane in big wind and icky conditions. Today the snow was wet, it was raining and the temps were about 33 degrees so that constituted icky conditions for me. In addition the landing area at the Gun Club is dotted with trap houses that make good targets when landing, plus there is a strong rotor, especially with 20-plus winds blowing. In lighter conditions the rotor is less of a factor and I have flown numerous glass ships here.

The same thing that makes a wicked rotor at the Gun Club also makes for a much more comfortable time flying, especially while winter sloping, because the last several feet of the slope are vertical and this kicks the incoming wind right over our heads so we get to stand in a nice dead air area.

The lift today was excellent and my LEG Mustang was ripping. Dave also had his Slope Scale P-51 out and he had it moving fast. A slight issue with the rotor when Dave was landing resulted in a stripped off tail but no major damage. I managed a nice one-point landing with my foam P-51. Right on the nose! The plane was coming in perfectly but about 15 feet off the ground got a violent pitch down into the ground. Several inches of snow prevented any damage. Well that and Jack’s LEG planes are tough!
