Fun-1
Dusted Off the Fun-1 Today

A light East wind was blowing and so I dusted off the Fun-1 to see how she would fly after sitting for almost a year. I hadn't even taken the wing off since last years ODR at MWSC!

I went to Atwater Beach and was greeted with a light 8 MPH or so breeze. After a couple of years of light air at the MWSC I knew it would fly. The only question was how well? Actually, it flew better than I remembered!

I practiced some Scandinavian style F3F turns and the plane responds to this style well. The idea is to keep the plane over the best lift and involves kind of a modified half pipe. It is hard to explain but easy to demonstrate. Look at Viking Race '98 video and you will see several guys using the style. I doubt it would be a good idea to use the technique in a Man-on-man race with 3 other planes in the air but I think it is a good style for slopes with lighter lift and it is easy to keep your speed up.

It is good to know that the Fun-1 is ready for another year of ODR racing and is set up well. Now, if I can just avoid my blunder from last year when I blew away my program about 5 minutes before the start of the first race, maybe I can win the thing! I am looking forward to the competition.
