Got my Opus and it is Sweet!
Posted by Greg Smith on Feb 14, 2003, 20:46

I have been getting planes from Espen Torp for a while now and when he picked up the Opus I knew I wanted one, so I ordered 5! Yep, shipping one is killer, and I knew other guys would love to have one of these super slopers, so I took the plunge.

Opus V

The Opus has been around for sometime but Espen had specd a heavy-duty, DS version and it promised to be one strong plane. It does not disappoint. I also liked the fact that Espen went with the standard, rounded tips and not the curvy, breaky ones.

The Opus has a one-piece, molded, RG-14 wing that spans 74.5 inches. Bottom hinged flaps and top hinged ailerons. The fuse is fiberglass with substantial carbon reinforcement. It has a molded V-tail and includes 10 ounces of brass wing ballast.

One of the features that make the Opus strong is a nose with no canopy or nose cone. The radio gear mounts on a pallet and is pushed into the nose. I can tell you from my experience with the SH-50 project that this type of nose is the way to go for strength. The ET version also uses a heavy glass layup on the wing and a carbon spar for DS loads.

Two cool products that can help you get your Opus in the air in short order are Gary Legerton's finishing kit and a Tom Hoopes wiring harness. I have my kits on the way and I'll report back when the plane is done.
