One Design Slope Racing class as run for the Midwest Slope Challenge.
Rules adapted from those created by Paul Naton and Charlie Richardson for the Torrey Pines Gulls. We owe them a debt of gratitude for coming up with this fun event. No changes have been made that would exclude any plane legal for the 1999 or 2000 MWSC ODR.
Anyone or any plane manufacturer can design a ship that fits these specifications.
Basic: 60" span max.- 25 oz. min wt., 35 oz. max wt. (weight subject to verification before and during the race event).
Single taper wing, SD 6060 airfoil. The Fun-1 now uses a SD 6062 airfoil so that must be OK too.
Wing: Max span: 60". Root: 7" min / max Tip: 5" min / max
Wing Area: 360 sq. in.
Airfoil: SD-6060, (SD 6062) 9.5% minimum thickness (wing must fit template to be legal)
Ailerons: 20" min/max aileron lgth., 6" from root, 3" from tip, 1.5 inch width max. (Since the "Fun-1" does not meet this spec, aileron span & location will not be enforced.)
Wing attachment: Any, plastic or metal bolts OK.
Wing Construction: Foam core, any type, or built-up, or EPP is legal balsa or obechi sheeting OK, or EPP with tape or shrink covering OK. Any spar system legal, NO carbon, glass, plywood or composite skins legal. Glass OK for joining wing halves. 5" width max. No leading edge reinforcement except for standard basswod, balsa or spruce is legal. No Ballast system allowed for wings. 1 or 2 servos for wing.
Fuselage: 36" max. length, 32" min. length.6" min. circumference at maximum girth station at wing shoulder. Glass/Kevlar OK, carbon only allowed for repairs. EPP or wood OK and encouraged. Ballast must be bolted in body near CG location.
No ballast may be attached external to the fuselage structure, this will be strictly enforced. Unconditional DQ from the event will be the result. We fly in a "lead-free" zone (Corps. of Engineers rule).
Tail Assembly: Standard, V-tail or T-tail (added 2001) allowed , no min/max area. Construction must be balsa, plastic or coroplast, no composite (including wood over foam) construction or exotic materials.
Radio Gear: Any radio gear can be used, Y-chords for ailerons/flaps legal, No flap/elevator or elevator/flap mixing allowed 3 servo maximum, 2 wing servos and 1 for elevator, no rudder surfaces allowed. Camber change by flap stick control only!
Other: CD can disqualify any plane he feels does not meet the specifications or the spirit of the One Design class. Pilot can appeal DSQ after races. "Spirit" means: Keeping the planes speed equalized, cheap, and easy to fly. Anyone bending the rules for speed advantage by using exotic materials and/or illegal airfoils or building outside the parameters set forth will be in violation of the terms of the class and can be disqualified from race or races.
Kit available: CR HIgh Performance Sailplanes offers the "FUN 1" kit that meets this ODR specification. Call CR at 760-451-0056 for information or to order.
